Socially at Ease.

Shelton says out of the blue, in jest:
"I'm stylish and socially at ease. I'm a homeschooler in disguise."

I don't know where he comes up with stuff like that.

Because homeschoolers are traditionally socially awkward around public school kids?

LOL, he may have talked to my son Nick. He said in college the homeschoolers always stood out. Often unusual, and sure of themselves...he may not be as disguised as he thinks.

I'm not sure what he means by what he said - I think he was being sarcastic to all that people say about homeschoolers these days lol!

I think traditionally yes, homeschoolers are awkward around public school kids - but they needn't be! :) My children enjoy friendships with kids who come from all sorts of educational backgrounds. We're not called to be a click. :)

Don't kids always amaze us with the most interesting and amusing things they say!  They really are an amazing source of entertainment and wonder!  Home schooled or not, they can be well adjusted and intelligent!  I think you do a great job!  I probably won't live to see what they become for their Maker, but I'm sure they will grow to bless Him in many special ways.  Love, love, love your blogs and pictures!

Ha - I agree with bakersdozen2 - I know exactly what he means :) I always enjoy peoples astonished looks when they find out I was homeschooled. But you're so...normal. Haha. Good times!

You're right, Jennie... in many ways they are very comfortable with their nerdiness. And others are just awkward period.
I see the negatives and the positives on both sides. But sometimes I've got to smile at the Star Wars LOTR obsessed young men I see in the H.S. community. The number one comment other kids make to my college kids is that they are so comfortable in their skin.

Welllll yeah, they weren't torn down all their lives by their peers. That's not to say I don't see positives in kids who grew up in public schools!! I do.

My favorite thing about H.S.ers is their unintended use of bad words (they think they mean something they don't)
Erin said a couple months ago about someone, Wow! What a pr*ck!!"
I said, "Erin, do you know what that word means?"
She said sure!! It means a stuck up person!!!

Or the young lady who yelled at her sister in the middle of a coop science project, "Stop being such a wh_r_!"
Everyone stopped and stood silent staring at her.
She thought the word meant a person who hoarded things (being a hog, right?) :D

It worries me when I hear and see such cliquishness amongst homeschoolers as I am a homeschooler too. I really appreciate your insight and reminders that we need to stay out of the ditches and reach and love people of all kinds.

too funny, beth. years ago, early on in marriage i called shayne that same thing! he looked at me shocked. "do you know what that means?" i shrugged and said, "someone who's being a snob!" of course he busted out laughing and has never let me forget it.

i THOUGHT i had heard the word in a jane austen movie - which i think was actually, "prig." ;)

oh too funny. Yes, all that reading and we come up with funny stuff. I do think homeschoolers can laugh at themselves. Probably all that laugher in family, and really seeing one anothers strengths and weaknesses

hahahaahaa!! We try to be also.  But lately I have been thinking a bit about how this could be an idol to:  you know: not looking the part.  Always got to keep them eyes on Jesus.  It  is crazy how quickly anything tries to steal the place of him.  This is funny though.  Truly an undercover brother...

you are so right - everywhere I've gone there has always been the folks trying oh so hard to not fit the part of the "homeschooler" - only to (at least by appearances) trying so hard not to be that they often go over board on the other end. The whole ditch thing. Middle ground is hard to find - kind of like a tiny island in the middle of the ocean - deep water on both sides.

LOL! That is sweet. . . . reminds me of the T's my daughter's love to wear that say, "Beware! I am an unsocialized homeschooler!" It's been a great way to open up conversations about homeschooling.
